Life in the Fast Lane is Exhausting

Is it just me or do you sometimes feel like you are being overwhelmed by the daily grind? Increasingly it seems as if we are taking on more and more tasks, whether family or work related, which leaves us very little or no free time at all. What’s more, as a society we are becoming reactive rather than proactive. We are constantly attached to our mobile phones, tablets, you name it. It is now virtually impossible to go on public transport and see someone without some sort of device attached to them. The fundamental problem therein is that we are no longer taking time out to process our own thoughts and reflect. Instead we are constantly worried about replying to Facebook messages, texts, tweets, alerts etc. As a society we live on our nerves. I say it’s time to switch off , you don’t need to be permanently in front of a screen, or use a VPN for computer because your entire life is online! So here are my tips for great ways to unwind and have some me-time:

· Do something you enjoy – whether that be reading a good book, taking your dogs for a walk, or my personal favourite, cosying up after a long day’s work and watching a film at home (popcorn and ice-cream optional!)

· Get a good night’s sleep – have a strict no laptop in bed policy. Allow yourself time to fully relax.

· If you still can’t switch off. Write down a list of things that are worrying you, then go through them one by one, sorting out the ones you can change, from the ones you can’t. If you can’t change something then why worry about it? It’s pointless, and it’s also a waste of your time and energy.

Let’s face it, life is becoming extremely fast-paced, we often find ourselves doing more than one thing at a time, and we can’t relax as we feel as though we are not being productive if we do. There is always something to worry about like the economy, politics, and equality for all. Every day there seems to be a new argument.

In the western world, we are more stressed than our less privileged counterparts and is it any wonder, worries such as “Do I have enough friends on Facebook?” and “What if I buy this product and then is goes out of fashion?” are always on our minds. We are all too eager to better ourselves for the benefit of those around us than for ourselves.

We are also worried about offending people, those around us; people we have never met but could stumble upon our social networking profiles and take offence to things we may have posted. It doesn’t matter if we had the intention of causing harm or not as most of us simply post as a joke.

Despite this, there are good things to come out this, such as equal rights, fair representation for those with different abilities, and the involvement of all across our community. But let’s all learn how to relax!

With wars raging, the numbers throughout the world struggling to find enough food increasing and the gap between rich and poor at home widening, it is sometimes hard to remain hopeful about the world we live in.

Recently, I discovered The Venus Project (www.thevenusproject.com), an organization started by Jacque Fresco. From what I’ve read, they offer ideas about how to solve the problems of the world today. They view the current monetary system as problematic. Capitalism, Communism, Socialism, Fascism while different in many ways all support a monetary system. Instead of a monetary economy, The Venus Project proposes a resource based economy.

The question then becomes not whether we have the money to buy something, but whether we have the resources to build it. This may sound strange the first time you hear of the idea. But if you take the time to read their proposals and wonder how the future could unfold, you may find it an attractive idea. This type of society would bring an end to war, hunger and poverty. As things stand today, these problems all stem from living in a monetary system. Where there is profit to be made, some people who draw the short straw are going to end up suffering.

One of the ideas that I found interesting is that ownership will become something of the past. Things are only useful to us when we are actually using them. For instance, a camera is of little use unless we are taking pictures. So we could have libraries for more than just books. In a future society, there could be a library for cameras, places for people to park shared cars, a library for technology tools – iPlayer Ipad US) and so on. If all people of the world have access to things, we can improve the life of many.

You may feel that some people would end up “worse off” than they are today. But just getting access to goods is only one of the benefits of a resource based economy. We may be able to get to the stage where machines can do practically all our jobs. This would leave humans free to pursue our passions rather than the paycheck which is often our current goal.

By ensuring that companies receive a dividend for greener electricity then building wind turbines and and solar panels become more attractive. This has massively increased capacity in both these areas, although it should be noted that the cost to German economy has been significant.

The UK developed a policy called The Renewable’s Obligation. This required that all electricity companies had to purchase a certain proportion of their electricity from renewable generators. However this meant that the companies created ‘green tariffs’ without purchasing extra green capacity though, thus minimizing the benefits to capacity.

Although it still makes a difference, the power of the consumer can force greener industries. Take a very simple example, in an everyday consumer product – the humble lawnmower. For years the growth in this area has been in electric and petrol mowers because of ease of use, however check on this site now and you’ll find lots of human powered mowers.
